Top 5: Most Colourful Towns & Cities in Europe

Aside from world famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower or the Roman Coliseum, Europe is also known for its’ many colourful and historical districts that look like they have just come off the pages of a fairytale storybook.

Here is a list of my Top 5, along with some facts about each location.


1. Burano, Italy

  • Located approximately 7km from Venice.
  • Burano is composed of four islands which are all interconnected by bridges.
  • The name “Burano” comes from “Porta Boreana”, which means “the northern door of the city.”


2. Copenhagen, Denmark

  • Largest city in Scandinavia.
  • Denmark is rated the #1 Happiest Country in the World.
  • Over 55% of Copenhageners commute to work by bicycle.

3. Cinque Terre, Italy

  • Means “five lands,” as there are 5 villages within Cinque Terre.
  • Both a national park, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • All five villages are linked together by walking & hiking trails.

4. Reykjavik, Iceland

  • Means “smoky bay,” because of it’s geothermal springs & boiling natural geysers.
  • Home to the Blue Lagoon, which is the nation’s most popular tourist attraction.
  • Population of over 130,000 residents.

5. Colmar, France

  • One of the most well preserved historical towns in Eastern France.
  • Founded in the 9th Century.
  • Population of just over 70,000 people.

    I LOVE Burano and Copenhagen when I visited them I couldn’t stop taking pictures!! Didin’t know about the other cities thought! so thank you for sharing this! 🙂

    These European cities looks amazing. I am sad to say that I haven’t been to any that you have mentioned but am planning to head to Europe next year so this is totally on my list. Cinque Terre looks unreal!!!

  5. Reykjavik looks so well planned apart from being colorful. And I like the splash of colors in Colmar. I will definitely visit these towns on my next trip to Europe

  6. What a great roundup. Of this list, we’ve only featured Reykjavik. But the beautiful architecture and colorful buildings of these other cities are so enticing. Definitely added them to our travel bucket list.

  10. I was going to go to Burano in March but my 5 year old really wanted to see the Eiffel Tower so we switched Venice for Paris. I really hope to make it there one day. I’m a photographer and would love to take pictures of those beautiful buildings!

  17. As I Read down the list it just kept getting better, Iceland looked so beautiful, but I think Colmar France is my favorite, I love how all the colors are so vibrant and blend together.

  22. To be honest, Europe hasn’t been high on my bucket list in the last couple of years but I’ve thought about it much more recently. I love this post and it definitely is feeding my desire to explore that part of the world, the photo of Burano looks especially beautiful!!


  23. Love them all! There are a couple I haven’t seen yet, and that includes Copenhagen, which I’m really keen to see now. Reminds me a little of Cologne.

  26. That’s a colorful bunch of places! I’d really like to visit Cinque Terre (and all the others too ;)). Don’t know if you have visited or heard about Costa Nova in Portugal. There are some colorful striped houses that are absolutely gorgeous.
